Usama bin Laden; Profile of a Coward

Posted by politicalpartypooper on May 6, 2011

He’s dead.  Enough said.

Except for this.  Osama Bin Laden lived in a well stocked “compound” (that’s military for “mansion”) for the last five years of his life, sipping on Coke and Pepsi, whiling away his time on what I am sure was state of the art computer equipment.

While he sent men, women, and boys to die for God and the cause, he smoked pot (marijuana plants were found growing right near the wall of his compound).  While thousands of his devoted followers lived in poverty, Bin Laden was wallowing in privileged seclusion, in his own little gated community.  He asked his followers to live in caves and in the open fields, and all the time, the closest he got to roughing it was living without a phone line, which in my house would be considered a blessing.

Usama bin Laden was a hypocrite, a coward, and a charlatan.  He posed for the world as a holy man, but he was nothing more than a con man, swindling thousands out of hard-earned money, time, and even their lives.

I suspected that this was the case for years.  He hid for more than a decade while he sent young boys out to die fruitlessly against the strongest army this world has ever known.  There are claims that we had him pinned down at Tora Bora, but I’m guessing bin Laden was never there.  It just wasn’t his style.  I know we see all sorts of videos of him aiming guns and walking, but in those videos he’s always dressed differently than everyone else around him, and I’ve yet to see video of him actually conversing with a person.  He liked to preach, but you never see him smiling at a joke or just talking with a friend.  All we see are images of bin Laden holding court.

Court is adjourned, Mr. bin Laden.  You’ve been convicted, and your punishment is death.

Even now, there is a rumor that he shoved his wife at the SEAL who killed him in an effort to make her take his bullet.  I’m not sure if that rumor is true, but it would fit bin Laden’s profile.

The profile of a coward.

Fareed Zakaria mentioned earlier this week that the goal of Al Qaeda terrorists is to terrorize us, since they are terrorists.  Shame on you, Fareed.  And here, you were one of my favorite talking heads because of your in- depth reporting.  But you missed the boat on this one by an entire universe, and you, of all people, should know better.  I ran into another blogger who cited Fareed’s quote, which is as follows:

The purpose of terrorism is to provoke an overreaction. Its real aim is not to kill the hundreds of people directly targeted but to sow fear in the rest of the population. Terrorism is an unusual military tactic in that it depends on the response of the onlookers. If we are not terrorized, then the attack didn’t work. Alas, this one worked very well.

Now, I understand that we call Al Qaeda terrorists, and from our perspective, Fareed’s comment might make a lot of sense.  However, it only makes sense to us.    Al Qaeda takes an entirely different view on the subject.  Sure, they want to scare us, but their goal is much larger than that.  I left a comment at this other blogger’s site, and the bottom part of this post is the gist of it:

Al Qaeda does not call themselves terrorists, for starters. So, assuming that their goal is to terrorize us, or to make us afraid is a mistake.

Actually, their goals have been clearly spelled out for many years. All you really need to do is read some of the teachings of Sayyid Qutb to understand what they aim to achieve. But I’ll spell it out for you.

They aim to revive Islam, establish “true” Islamic states, install Sharia, and eliminate all non-Muslim influences from their Muslim world. Their main enemies are Jewry, socialism, nationalism, and democracy. According to Qutb and his students, Muslims are Muslims and nothing else. They are not Americans, Egyptians, Palestinians, Saudis, or any other nationality. “Muslim” is the totality of their being. Anyone who does not believe in this way is an enemy.

So when you write that their goal is to terrorize us, you fall way short of what they are actually trying to accomplish. They might use terror as a tool, but to suggest that this is their goal exposes an ignorance that they would be more than happy to have you believe in.

This didn’t start because of Israel, or because of the Palestinian situation. And this isn’t just an American problem. It’s an international one. You can trust that they won’t stop until they have either achieved their goal, or all have died fighting for it; because they believe God has decreed it.

Terror? It’s only a tool. Sayyid Qutb taught that all means toward achieving their goal were not only justified, but necessary. The world hasn’t seen a threat like this since the early days of Christianity and Islam. Further, they do the majority of their “work” not through terror, but through teaching.

Terrorizing us is their goal?  Not hardly, not even by half.
