WHAT DOES THE CITIZENS UNITED V FEC VERDICT MEAN?

Posted by politicalpartypooper on January 22, 2010

The Supreme Court, yesterday, sided with Citizens United against the FEC, in a landmark decision that overturns the limits placed on corporations, unions, and charities for Federal elections.  What does it all mean, Basil?

For starters, it means that corporations will now have more power than ever when attempting to influence Federal elections, and legislation.  It also means that regular citizens stand to lose even more as Washington continues to become ever more influenced by big money.

As if citizens did not already have enough to hate Washington for, yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling gave them even more.  In an attempt to gauge American interest in the results of this case, I visited the Huffington Post, only to find that over 24,000 people had weighed in on this decision in less than twenty-four hours.  I sent the HuffPost an email asking them if this was some sort of record, but had not received a response as of this publishing.

Corporations with unlimited abilities to influence elections.  How is this possible?  Because a Supreme Court in this United States of America ruled it so, ALONG PARTY LINES.  But the Supreme Court is not political.  It won’t be after yesterday, either.  From now on, the Supreme Court will be a corporate court, appointed by the President who won the election with the best campaign that corporate money could buy.

Are you upset about this?  You should be.  Your vote, this fall, will be influenced by more corporate money than ever before, all in the guise of Free Speech.  I guess it has to be called Free Speech, because from now on, nothing else will be free.
