PRESIDENT OBAMA CHANGES HIS LANGUAGE ON REFORM ISSUES

Posted by politicalpartypooper on August 9, 2009

Since well before the 2008 Presidential Election, health care reform has been called “health care reform”.  In his weekly address today, President Obama called that reform “health insurance” reform.  Here were his words:

“That’s why health insurance reform is so important. And that’s why we must get this done – and why we will get this done – by the end of this year”

I am guessing that this change was intentional.  The White House must have finally realized that the main enemy in this reform battle is the health insurance lobby.  There is no better way to expose your enemy than to name him directly.

Here, here!  All in for Health Insurance Reform!

I agree with you, PPP, that the change in Obama’s vocabulary is intentional, but I don’t see it the way you interpret it (unless you are being ironic and am missing the irony here, which is, of course, very possible).

Obama is scaling down his goals and this is what his new language reflects. This is no longer about health “care” reform, but about implementing new consumer protection laws within the private insurance industry. He tells us, essentially, that this is the scope of his reform. (I totally hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid I’m not.)

The nebulous public option may or may not materialize, and it has been a cause of so much contention already that Obama attempts to focus now, in his speeches at least, on achieving what’s doable and less scary to Americans: introducing consumer protections a.k.a. health *insurance* (not health *care*) reform.

Which, in practical terms, means pouring more money into this dysfunctional and bottomless pit of greed and human misery called our health “care” system.

I hope you are wrong, Elizabeth. If he waffles like that, the American people will be without anyone to protect their interests, which sadly, is supposed to be the job of Congress.
