M.A.F.I.A. (Many Americans Fighting Influencing Assholes)

Nope, that’s not the cost of an F-22 fighter. It’s also not the number of sand pebbles at your local beach, silly.
That number represents the amount of money spent by lobbyists in 2008. In 2007, lobbyists spent $2.85 Billion. In the last ten years, lobbyists have spent $24.70 Billion dollars.
Doing what, you might ask? Indeed, doing what?
If you listen to your elected officials, as I have had the unfortunate experience of doing many times, that lobbying money is not about buying influence. It’s also not about bribery, payoffs, or any other way you might use to describe total corruption in Washington.
Your elected official wants you to look the other way, as he accepts a “free” handout from such concerned citizens as “Health Insurers Against Paying Claims” or “Banks Too Big To Fail”.
Okay, those concerned citizen groups don’t really exist, but if they did, wouldn’t that be great?
I’m thinking about starting my own Special Interest Group. I think I’ll call it, ” ‘Many Americans Fighting Influencing Assholes”, or, “M.A.F.I.A.” as an acronym. We’ll start Internet donation bases, attempting to raise millions, and we’ll just start buying Senators and Congressmen, one at a time, like the cash whores they are.
And when they call us to ask us if we’d like to meet with them as a thank you for our generous donation, we’ll just tell them, “No thanks, we just wanted to see how easy it would be to buy you. You’ll hear from us for the next important vote, like, say, making sure the Public Option is approved in any health care reform.
Yeah…M.A.F.I.A. …Many Americans Fighting Influencing Assholes
I like that.
