Sunday, March 29, 2009, will mark a day that the small township of Richfield, Wisconsin will probably never forget.  On their way to church, Karl and Denise Ziebart saw a flatbed truck sliding across the ice, directly at them.  In a moment of what must have sheer terror, Karl swerved into the roadside ditch in an attempt to avoid the accident.

The Ziebart’s were on their way to church, with their three children, and the two children of a close family friend.  Altogether, there were seven people in the Ziebart’s SUV.  Three of the seven did not survive the impact as the flatbed truck crossed the center-line, and crashed into the driver’s side of the SUV in the ditch.  Karl Ziebart, his 9-year-old son, Luke; and a 12-year-old girl from another family were killed.  All of the people in the SUV were wearing their seatbelts.  Karl’s wife, Denise; the Ziebarts’ two other children; and the 12-year-old girl’s 11-year-old brother suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospitals.

The truck’s driver and his two passengers – ages 30 and 31, both of Milwaukee – were detained on suspicion of being in the country illegally, according to the Sheriff’s Department. They are in custody at the Washington County Jail.

The truck’s driver does have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license, according to the Sheriff’s Department, and he is believed to have been in the country since about 1996.  None of the men in the flatbed truck were injured.

I checked with a local source on Tuesday, and was told that it was almost certain that the three men in the flatbed truck were indeed here illegally, and worked for a local landscaping contractor.  If this is true, it begs the question; would the three who passed away be alive today if these three men had not been allowed to stay here illegally?

This is a tragedy for the entire community, but it’s a tragedy that shouldn’t have occurred.  Say what you will about illegal aliens and the conditions they live under in Mexico, but facts are facts.  We have laws, and every day, untold numbers of illegals thumb their noses at those laws.  We have a process in place that allows immigrants entrance into our nation legally, even allows them to undergo the steps toward citizenship.  Left-leaning Democrats are more likely to ignore those laws, and push for amnesty for the masses of people who are here illegally.

But the problem is, no one knows just who these illegals are, how many there are, or where they are.  It’s a problem that simply cannot be solved by passing new laws to deal with them, especially since we’ve ignored the obvious first step; which would be enforcing the laws we already have.  Lawmakers and certain law enforcement agencies are breaking the law themselves when they ignore the laws in place.

In a nation where we single out people for extra taxation, where we have mandatory minimum sentencing laws for citizens who break specific laws, that we have no will to enforce the laws against illegal entry and residence in this country is pathetic.  Three people, two of them children, are dead because three men decided that they were above obeying the law of this nation.  Two families are crushed with grief, and nothing can bring back their loved ones.  I’m certain I could have used more flowery language to describe the truth about this case, but as you know, words can dictate the response people have to the news they read.

I want people to know what really happened.  If we are going to uphold our laws, then we must uphold all of them.  If those laws are distasteful to you, then do the work to make changes that are meaningful, instead of acting like nothing is amiss, and basically utilizing a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy of immigration law enforcement.

That kind of policy gets people killed.  Just ask the Ziebart’s and their friends.
