WHAT WOULD DO IF YOU KNEW?

What would you do if you knew?

I’m going somewhere with this, so hang in there.  By the way, amazingly, this might have nothing at all to do with politics.

Ponder something for me if you will.  What would you do if you knew that today, you had seen one of your closest loved ones for the last time?  Now, it’s too late; there is nothing you can do about their absence, you will never see them again.  No more conversations, no more smiles, no more hugs, no more comforting presence.  They are gone, and you will never have them back.

Forgive me, please, for tugging at your heart so.  However, I ask you, please, beg you to think about what it would be like to have that hole in your heart.

Now imagine, if you are still willing to read on, that by some chance, your loved one returns one year later.  You don’t know that they will return, but one day, there they are.

What do you do?  How do you respond to this reunion?

Yes, love them like that, right now, as often as you can.  None of us knows, except that we do know that one day, one of our close loved ones will no longer be there.  We don’t know when, but we do know what.  It’s as unavoidable as our own death.

If you knew that today was the last day you would see your close loved one, at the end of the day, would you have any regrets?  Would you have sent that last text message to someone you barely know, or driven to the store for the sixth time this week, rather than reach out and touch the heart that is bound to yours?  Would you have spent every waking moment with them?  Or would you have found a reason to be cruel, because they were going away, leaving you all alone?

What would you do if you knew?

Cell phones, books, television, stores, and sports will always be there.  We owe no allegiance to these things that control our lives, these things which literally suck the blood from our closest relationships.  Activity and things have no heart; they don’t even care if you are there.

But what would you do if you knew that one of your close loved ones did?

Celebrate the reunion every time you see them again.
